FRAMING A WORLD OUT OF BALANCE

STATEMENT OF INTENT

This project is a form of social sculpture, it uses art as a transformative practice done interactively with others. I am creating a series of fabric collages based on extended moments during which I felt anxiety, dislocation, or alienation: the loss of a feeling of control. Through the obsessive labor of my art process, I reclaim my agency. I'm making paintings with cut fabric, sewing them onto clothing and then giving these pieces to people who are important to me, including those who are personally close and to public figures. This group of individuals will be asked to wear and document the clothing as the collages begin to fray from use.

The creation of these pieces, the selection of recipients, and the exchange and request for participation in the project is a transfer of energy that seeks connection and understanding. I hope that these objects will eventually return to me, but part of this project is in the vulnerability–the result of releasing control to collaborators of varying levels of reliability and visibility.
